Random...

Perhaps I was not cut out to be a blogger...  I am so bad at it!!!  Always, always, always running behind on posting.  In fact, the other day I saw that I'd started a post back in June (with some really adorable pictures of Ruby at the park!), but I never finished and published it.  What the heck?!?

My poor little sick girl.  But I love her sweet face.

Anyway...

First of all, YAY!  It's October!  That means it's Halloween month!  We kicked it off right yesterday with a pumpkin breakfast (pumpkin pancake for my babe, pumpkin bagel with pumpkin cream cheese for me), then I decked Ruby all out in orange & black striped leggings, a Halloween t-shirt, and this witchy clippie I whipped up for her:

If you follow me on Instagram, you already saw this picture.  And if you don't follow me on Instagram, GUESS WHAT???  I put a cute little button over there just below Ruby's birthday ticker that will take you right to me!  Oh, and hey!  You can now follow me on Pinterest, too!  Want to know the real reason I'm a bad blogger?  Yeah, it's those two time-sucks right there!  But whatever, I'm just proud that I figured out how to do buttons.

So anyway, speaking of Instagram and Halloween hair accessories, did you know that there are all kinds of shops on Instagram???  I just found this out (guess I've been living under a rock), and it is daaaangerous.  But I snagged 2 super adorable Halloween hairbows in this crazy fast flash sale over there.  Handmade by a mama, and very reasonably priced.  They haven't arrived yet, though, which is why I made the witchy hat above!

And on the subject of making things (yet another reason I'm a bad blogger - in my free time, I can blog, make something, or clean my house, so... yeah), I'm one of those moms that feels the need to make my child's Halloween costume.  Which means I should probably get on that!  Though how I'll top last year, I'm not sure...

Ahhhhhh!!!  She's TINY!

Ok, so, looking at that picture, there's no topping last year.  This year, she's going to be a black cat.  I like to keep it traditional.  I purchased a sequin cat ear headband, so basically I'll be making a tutu and a tail.  Add a black onesie/tights, and we're set.  I also like to keep it easy, and I don't mind at all that her get-up will be similar to last year.

I'm also trying to decide if now is the time to start my Etsy shop.  I actually have a name picked out and registered already, I've just never taken the time to create an inventory.  Ruby's toddler school is having a craft fair in November, and I'm thinking about participating and using it as a jumping off point?  I have some irrational fears about making things for people to buy though, so I guess that's my hesitation.  It would be fun to have some playing around money if I sold anything, though.    Hmm...

OH!  That reminds me of something else!  I'm kind of a shopping addict, but as a SAHM, I have a very strict budget.  A while back on here I shared my MyHabit referral link.  I don't know who you were, but TWO very lovely people clicked that link, made purchases, and earned me referral credits!  Whoever you are, thank you SO much!  I had an opportunity to put them to good use the other day:

I have been searching high, low, and everywhere in between for toddler rain boots that would fit Ruby.  We live in Washington, she NEEDS boots!  But finding cute ones in a size 5 (which is still a size too big, but the smallest they go)?  Impossible!!!  Ok, well, there's the toddler Hunter boots that I'm dying over, but they are way way too expensive for toddler boots.  Anyway, the other day these Carter's boots popped up on MyHabit, and I was able to purchase them with my referral credits!!!  And those adorable flats, too!  For both pairs of shoes, I paid $1.10.  So thank you, thank you, thank you (Mr. G thanks you too) for using my link, whomever you are.  Seriously.

Now if somebody could find me a raincoat for Ruby (yeah, she doesn't have one of those either), I'd be set...

Random...

Ruby is napping.  Rather than clean my house like I should (because, OMG...), I'm going to dump my brain into the internets.  Ok?

I took some pics of R being adorable and running around in her cloth diapers this morning, so you'll get those too.  I'm sure you all mind.  I didn't edit them either.  Not that I have much editing capability, with just iPhoto...

I need a new computer, badly.  I have a many years old macbook, and it's getting ready to bite the dust.  It's so old that you can't update the OS anymore, and I can't put Photoshop on it.  Ugh.  But a new compy is not in the budget.

Speaking of new computers, my younger brother worked as an Apple Genius for a time.  He recently resigned, to take a better job, but before he did, he picked up a new computer for my sister-in-law with his employee discount.  Then, while setting it up for her, he promptly spilled a beer on it and fried the thing.  Not even kidding.  Let that be a lesson for you all.  Beer + computer do not mix.

Hey!!!  College football season has begun!  I am SO SO SO excited to watch my Buckeyes dominate!  I'm also really excited to dress Ruby up in her game day gear.  If you follow me on Instagram (yes, I still need to make a link button), you saw that I finished up a scarlet and gray skirt for her to wear with a kick-butt onesie I got for her off of Etsy.  We also got her her very first Seahawks jersey, and she's been carrying it around the house yelling, "GO!!!" ever since.

Speaking of that, Ruby is quite the sports fan.  She loves "ball ball" (any ball sport).  When we were at Target, she saw that football was playing on all of the display tvs, so we stopped to watch.  A young guy working there came up and asked if I needed help.  I replied, "No, she just wants to watch football."  To which he said, "Awesome."  Yeah.  She is pretty awesome!

This looks safe...

Yesterday I made Ruby accompany me to Nordstrom to get fitted for a real, post-pregnancy, post-nursing bra.  Holy crap.  I forgot what it's like to wear a real bra!  It's great!  I bought one, because wow, Nordstrom bras aren't cheap, so I have some work to do to rebuild my non-nursing lingerie wardrobe.  Let's just say that my new bra is 3-4 cup sizes larger than all of my pre-pregnancy bras.  No, I don't think I grew that much.  I just was wearing really ill-fitting bras.  Eek!  Never again!

I'd also really like to totally revamp my actual clothes wardrobe, but that's not going to happen.  Still, Hello Apparel is having a huge sale today, and I might have to get one of their sweatshirts finally.  Would that be too hipster of me?

I feel like I'm wanting to turn Ruby into a total hipster baby, and find myself obsessing over her fall wardrobe, which is ridiculous.  But, I think it's really the only "hobby" I have time for?

My next door neighbor just had a new baby.  She's tiny, and squishy, and adorable, and it almost makes me want another.  But not really, toddlers are where it's at.

Are you guys watching Graceland (I told you this was going to be all over the place)?  I'm kind of obsessed & hate that it wasn't on this week!  I need more!  But it's almost over!  All of my summer tv is ending, sad.  I really enjoyed The Killing, Longmire, The Glades, Burn Notice, and Graceland.  What's coming up for fall?  I don't even know, except The Walking Dead, but that isn't until October, ugh.  Though my Homeland season 2 DVDs are supposed to ship in a week or so.  Can't wait for that!  What else do I need to be watching?  After Ruby goes to sleep, I like to rot my brain with tv.  And crocheting.  Because I'm a granny.

I am currently at war with my face.  I never had bad skin, even as a teenager, but now?  Now it is insane!  Thanks a lot post-partum hormones.  It is making me horribly self-conscious, and want to never be in pictures, which is why you never see me in any.  I googled for the best products you could buy in a drugstore, and am trying a few out now.  Cross your fingers.

Btw, we run now...

And throw huge balls.

There's a new Starbucks in town, and it's walking distance from my house.  Well, the one at the neighborhood hospital was also technically walking distance, but this one is probably under a mile away.  And I now have the Starbucks app.  Trouble.  Plus the new one also has a drive through, for sleeping baby times.  Double trouble.  We walked there the other day and it poured rain on us on the way back.  I didn't even mind, because I had a delicious drink in my hand.

Speaking of rain, the rainy season is upon us.  Ten months of rain.  What am I going to do with a toddler???  We will go nuts.  We have our toddler "school" on Mondays starting in September, and volunteering still, but what do I do with the rest of the days?  Ruby and I both go stir-crazy being stuck at home, and Mr. G frowns upon going shopping 3 days a week.  Ideas?

She is a nutcase.

And with that, it seems, the little lady is taking a short nap.  Of course.  But I think that was more than enough random for one day.  Time to go clock back in for mom-duty.  Perhaps we'll take a walk today...  To Starbucks...

Hi.

It's been a while, yes?

As always, I'm full of excuses.  Here are a few.

Ruby's having some sort of sleep regression.  As in, she won't go to sleep anymore.  Well, not without gut-wrenching, snot rolling down her face, huge alligator tears.  Which we don't do in this house.  But what that translates to is basically her wriggling around in bed with me for a couple of hours every night until she passes out from exhaustion around 10ish.  Since my only free time is dependent upon her being asleep, well, I don't have free time anymore.  I went to a toddler class taught by my former baby class instructor last night and talked about this a lot.  I'm still unsure what I want to do.

Isn't she the cutest, though?

I am trying my damndest to finish Ruby's rainbow quilt (which I started over 2 years ago) so that I can enter it in the fair.  The entry is a week from today.  I still have a good amount of work left to do in that short week.  It's possible, but it's going to take some cooperation from my family, and I'm just not sure I'm going to get that cooperation (which is a whole other story).  I will be really disappointed if I don't finish in time.

Ok, so I guess those are my only two excuses, but they're huge ones.

In other news, oh yeah btw, Ruby is WALKING.  She took her first steps two weeks ago.  While it's still not her preferred method of transportation (and she can't yet stand up without something to pull up on, so that hinders things), she's letting go and walking more and more on her own.  It is insane to me that less than three months ago we were getting her evaluated for gross motor delay, and now she has gone from nothing, to pulling up, crawling, sitting up, cruising, climbing stairs, and walking all in that short time.  Unreal.

Unrelated, I got a random email from a marketing gal at See Kai Run (makers of Ruby's favorite shoes), saying she'd found the blog, and could they post a picture of her wearing the shoes on their Facebook page?  I was surprised they'd found my little ol' blog, but said sure!  So you can peep my little lady out over there if you like.  And if you're visiting my blog because of her picture on the SKR page, welcome!  And thanks for visiting!  I promise I try to post more regularly. ;)

And in other thanks news, if you were the person who ordered something off of MyHabit after clicking my referral link that I had in my deal-finding post, you are AWESOME, and THANK YOU.  That credit will definitely be put to good use!

And, hey!  Want to know how to make me think you all are super duper SUPER awesome?  You can click this link and vote for Ruby in the Pediped casting call contest.  You all know that baby girl LOVES shoes.  This gig would be perfect for her, no?  You can vote once per day, so just head on over there daily (through 8/9) and give her a little vote.   Thanks!

Ok, this tired mama needs to drag her buns downstairs and try to sew without waking up the little monster sweet angel.  Sigh.  Seriously though, this quilt is going to be awesome like nothing you've ever seen.  If I finish it.

Random...

I'm a bad blogger.  Maybe it's just not in me?  I love having the posts I do make to be able to look back on (and I have when I've wanted to remember things, several times), but I often wonder if I didn't do my weekly iPhone pic round ups, if the blog would just fade away...

*Mr. G went out of town two weekends in a row.  Ugh.

*I'm really bad about picking up my real camera.  I wish that would stop!

*Ruby cut three teeth in 10 days, but two of them were back to back.  This has led to much clinginess, and some sleepless nights.

Just found this pic on my phone.  The last ride in the Keyfit.
*We still have no plans for the 4th at this point.  I really want to take Ruby to a parade, but I also don't want to fight tons of traffic, pay for parking, etc.  Which really limits my options around here in such a densely populated area.

*I also really want to take R to a spray park.  This one looks cool, no?

I wonder if she'd have fun, even though she isn't walking yet.  Hmm...

*Speaking of spray parks, summer finally came to Washington.  It's been around 90 degrees, which means it's also been about that hot inside my house.  Most homes here do not have a/c, because we usually don't need it.  But, man.  My sweat is sweating.  I'm parked in front of a fan, but fans really dry my contacts out.  I just can't win.

*I also seem to have no shorts that fit.  Ew.

*Over the weekend, I went to a baby shower for my good friend Sara.  She's having twins, a boy and a girl, at the end of the summer.  I am SO excited for her!  For her gift, I wanted to include handmade things, because she loves handmade, and also some favorites from when Ruby was little.  So I got a little basket that had a note from Ruby that said, "Dear Auntie Sara,  Here are some of my favorite things from when I was new..."  Then each thing was wrapped, with a clue, like, "...for wearing" "...for playing" "...for a change".  It was adorable, and I took not one single picture of it.  So sad.

*Also in there, was this Violet and Moss onesie:

How freaking cute is that?  I got it at the Kate Quinn warehouse sale for $5.  I want it bad for Ruby, but I am not willing to pay $38 to order it in her size!

*Ruby can climb stairs now.  Game over.

*She also now gives amazing hugs.

*Oops, and now she's awake!  Gotta run!

Random

Oh, hi blog.  Did you miss me?

I sure didn't mean to neglect you.  I wish I could say it won't happen again, but...  life.  It's been busy.

So what's new in G land?  Glad you asked!

*Ruby & I have been "helping" at our hospital Parent-Baby program, but we finally became official hospital volunteers!  Holy wow, the hospital makes you jump through a lot of hoops to do it though!  Immunization tests & screenings, interviews, background checks, readings and quizzes, multiple orientations.  But it's all done now, and we are official.

And how hilarious is our badge picture?

Yep.  Good old pointing Ruby.  When the time comes that we stop volunteering, we have to turn the badge back in to the hospital.  I'm kind of sad, because how great would that be for the baby book?

*I got a "top secret" text from a friend/former coworker giving me a heads up that my (former) boss might be giving me a call.  Turns out he was right.  My old classroom suddenly became available for the next school year, and I was the first one offered the job!  As amazing as that was, I turned it down.  I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt, but we had already decided I wasn't going back to work next school year, and I just couldn't see myself being ready that soon.  Which stinks, because who knows if that room will be available again, though my friend said he'd pull every string he could to get me back when I'm ready.  Love that.

*The weather here sucks, but we did manage to get a play date in at an awesome park on the one day it's been nice in the past couple of weeks!

*Ruby had an assessment done for potential developmental delay (gross motor) at an Early Intervention center.  That was a little bit hard for me, as a mama, but thanks to some pretty major milestones she decided to hit that same week, she didn't end up qualifying for E.I.  And O.  M.  G. the stuff she is doing now!  I think that needs a whole separate post.

I'm just going to throw in some random pics of the little one, that don't have anything to do with anything, mkay?

*I have been up to my EARS in car seat research, as Ruby has finally about maxed out her Chicco Keyfit infant seat.  If you know me in real life, you probably know that I am a little bit of a car seat safety nut.  I kind of think this also warrants it's own separate post, but lets just say that Ruby will be rear-facing forever, I spend way too much time on car-seat.org (and have the app!!!), and that I'm pretty sure I've finally made a decision on her next seat and will be ordering it within the week.  Phew.

*Also on the above topic?  My neighbors probably think I'm a creeper, because I definitely have peeked in the windows of at least one car to ogle some car seats.

*I have been doing so much sewing lately!  Maybe this is why the blog has taken a hit?  But, you guys, I LOVE my new machine so so much!  I resurrected a project that I started two(!) years ago.  It's a rainbow ticker-tape style quilt, that I hope will one day be on Ruby's big girl bed.  Each block looks like this:

Made from little scraps, all of the color of the outside of the block.  And there's 16 colors.  It's gonna be awesome!  And Ruby is very, very interested in playing with the finished blocks, so I think she will love it.  Also, I decided, to help motivate me to finish (I have SO many half-finished projects around here), I'm going to enter it in the county fair in August.  Aren't I just a little old lady?

*My brother still hasn't given me the pics from Ruby's birthday, and I want them!!!  I'm trying to be cool about it though, because he's a super busy guy.  I just can't wait, though!

*This happened the other day:

Yep.  Those are dog bowls.  Luckily, that was the (empty) food bowl, not the water bowl.  Though she did stick her arm, long sleeves and all, into the water bowl yesterday and thought it was hilarious.

*Lately I've been feeling like I've finally got this mama thing figured out.  Of course, then Ruby goes and throws a wrench in that (usually with something sleep-related), but after a whole year, I finally kind of feel like I've got this.  Maybe it's her age.  Right now is pretty awesome.  Or maybe it just really takes that long to feel like you've got it, but life feels a lot more "normal" now, which is kind of a relief.  I'm starting to understand why people actually have kids two years apart, because this is the time that it feels like you can handle it.  Don't worry though, internets, I am SO not ready for another one!

"All gone?!?"

*Those rocks (above) are in front of our house, and they do make a pretty good backdrop.

*This is getting long, so I'll end with one more, kind of important thing.  I am a bad blogger!  Reader Becca very kindly pointed out that I may be unintentionally ignoring people who comment on here.  And I was!  Turns out Blogger is lame, and even though I reply to my comments, unless you all click back here, you don't know it.  The fix was simple: reply to the email that notifies me that I have comments.

Except I wasn't getting emails to notify me that I had comments.

I knew it was possible, but I had tried to figure out how to get Blogger to do that, and I never could!  In case you are like me, it is NOT under "posts and comments" like you would think it would be.  It's under the "mobile and email" settings.

Now that that's all fixed up, I can stop "ignoring" you all.  Weeeee!  Seriously, though, I am SO sorry.  Bad blogger, bad.

Moss is boss.

Random...

*As emotional as Ruby turning one was for me, I feel like a switch has flipped, and now I feel like I'm falling hardcore in love with her all over again, but this time it's toddler-Ruby instead of newborn-Ruby.  I didn't think I'd love the toddler stage as much as baby, but Ruby is really coming into her own these days and being such a kid, and I am actually loving it!

*On a less happy note, under the recommendation of our pediatrician, I made an appointment for Ruby to be evaluated at an Early Intervention center for gross motor delay.  I knew this was coming, and while I could tell the pedi was trying to be really sensitive/coddle me about it, I was actually ok with it at the time.  Still, it is HARD as a mama to feel like your child is behind.  Yes, she is smart as a whip, but other babies her age move.  She does not, and we are around a lot of other babies, so it's pretty hard to see the younger ones doing something she can't (but should be able to) do.

*However...

This funny-faced photo was taken a couple of days ago.  Right after little miss big girl pulled HERSELF up to stand at her water table!  Finally, at 12mo4days old, she can pull up.  She did it countless times afterward (enjoying dropping her boat, sitting down to pick it up, throwing it up into the water, then standing to look at it).  She's also able to pull up on her crib, too, so I know it's not just a fluke.  She still does not crawl, cruise, or walk with assistance like most other babies her age though.

*That water table is probably the best toy we've ever owned.  We have played with it several times a day since her birthday.

*Part of the reason the water table is so awesome is because it has been amazing weather-wise here!!!  70's-80's every day.  It's like summer, and I am in love.  Of course, it's still May, and we're going back to rain next week, but still.  LOVE.

*I don't love that Ruby gave me her cooties, so I've been suffering through this glorious sunshine with the worst cold I can remember having.  We're still nursing, so I can't drug myself into oblivion until it's over, either.

*Speaking of nursing, I didn't put this in her 12mo post, but probably should have.  I am insanely proud of the fact that we made it to a year without Ruby ever having to take a drop of formula.  It was a goal of mine from the beginning, was almost thwarted immediately, but we fought on, wasn't always fun or easy, but we DID IT.  Sadly, I probably need to put a disclaimer here that this is not a knock on anyone who chose a different path than we did.  This is about me accomplishing my goal.  And to continue along with that theme, I'm immensely proud also that we never did any type of sleep training/CIO with her either.  I feel really strongly about that, and I am glad that societal pressure never swayed me.

*I read this post the other day, and I just love love love it.  Especially the part at the end about concealer and chocolate.  I've read Sarah's blog for years, and now that I am a mother, I treasure it even more.  She is SO wise, as well she should be having 6 kids!  We all have a lot to learn from her.  Plus, she has the cutest house and the best granola recipe.

*I finally got a pair of colored skinny jeans the other day.  I've only wanted some for the last year.  I could never find any that fit my post-baby body right, though, until yesterday.  Thank you, Gap Outlet.

*I also finally used my new sewing machine for the first time.  That thing is a dream!  This morning I whipped up a little drawstring bag to hold a birthday present I made for one of Ruby's little friends.  I'd made a similar bag for another of her buddies, and let me just say that it was SO much more enjoyable to do on my new machine.  I didn't really think I'd see much difference on something as simple as a little bag, but it is that much better.  There's so much stuff I want to make now, if only I had the time!  Perhaps this quilt (minus the ruffles & in different colors) for Ruby to sleep under, now that she's all grown up?

*My "Crafty Stuff" board on Pinterest has 292 pins.  I need to get on making some of that stuff.

*I recently read Ender's Game for the first time (though a friend of mine has been trying to get me to read it for a couple years, I just haven't had time!).  I love me a good dystopian society.  Which is funny, because if we really had a dystopian society, I'd probably be the first to go, with my lack of survival skills and refusal to eat meat off of bones.  Still, I'm excited to see the movie this fall, especially since a new theater is opening up in walking distance from our house!

Aaaaaand, I think that's enough random for you.  Time to go cross some things off my to-do list before the little lady wakes up from her nap!

Random...

I have so much I want to blog about.  Time is so scarce though!  Even though I feel like I don't accomplish anything during the day, the reality is that I accomplish spending lots of time with my girl.  Which is awesome.  But I can't see the finished project of that, and well, I like finished projects!  Anyway, because I haven't taken pictures of any of the things I want to blog about, you get a random mind dump.  With random pictures.

* My house is so SO messy, and it's driving me crazy.  IF Ruby takes a nap (and that's a big IF), I always want to spend that time crafting or blogging, not cleaning my house.  Plus, cleaning usually makes noise.  But seriously, it's bad.  I did vacuum yesterday though.

*  Did Starbucks stop doing the bring in an empty coffee bag, get a free drink thing?  I never did it, but I was going to, and now I don't see that printed on the bags anymore.  Hmm...

*  I want to do a ton of decorating stuff to the house.  Except I don't have the budget for it.  And, oh yeah, we hate our rented house.

*  On the topic of decorating, are two chevron rugs in one house too much?  We have the glorious yellow one upstairs in Ruby's room right now.  I fear that my beloved Ikea Stockholm Rand rug has bit the dust.  I loooooooooooove love love that rug, but Braidy retaliated having a little "sister" in a big big way, and none of my efforts to clean it have worked well enough that I feel comfortable letting Ruby play on the living room floor.  We can't really afford to replace it with an identical one, but this Rugs USA rug has caught my eye.  Two chevron = too much?  Or ok?  And is chevron on the way out?  I like it, but I do like to keep my rugs for a long time.

*  We call those jammies in the pic above, "jailbird jams".  I now have a sweater in identical stripes/colors, so we can be jailbirds together.

*  Ruby got her follow-up flu shot yesterday, and just like the first one, she didn't cry at all.  What is up with that?

*  Mr. G got me a massage gift certificate for V-day.  I've never had one, and I'm actually not sure how I feel about being rubbed down by a stranger.  Weird, no?

*  That picture is about a month and a half old.  And that is still the closest to crawling Ruby has gotten.  I know that all babies are on their own timeline, and some just skip straight to walking, but it doesn't seem like she's going to do that, and I kind of have anxiety and guilt about her immobility.  She's always been a horrible tummy-timer, and I feel like somehow that's my fault, and now it's making her unable to crawl.  I feel self-conscious when she's around other babies of a similar age and they are all over the place.

* I need to learn how to better use my camera.  I also probably need Photoshop, if I want to get the kind of pictures I want.  But that's not going to happen anytime soon.

* I'm having decorator paralysis about the last finishing touches for the nursery.

* I really need to lose a little bit of weight.  After Ruby was born, I lost weight quickly, but have since actually put more back ON.  Bad, I know, and it's affecting my self-esteem.  My time is SO limited, but we have the 30-Day Shred, which I think I could carve out enough time to do.  However, our TV has still not been returned by the repairman, and I don't have enough space upstairs to use that one.  Plus, there's the whole gross dog violated rug issue down there too.  I'd also like to do a couch to 5K program, but we don't have a treadmill.  I know me, and I know that I am not motivated enough to try to learn to run in the rain here in WA.  Plus, it will also be dark, since the only time I'll have to do it is after Mr. G comes home.  Sigh.

* This post has sort of become a complaining post.  That makes me sad. =(

* Ruby has begun initiating games of peekaboo with us, which makes me incredibly happy!  She'll peekaboo anything, from mesh laundry bags, to blankets or bath towels, to just grabbing my arm and holding it over her eyes.  It is SO stinking cute.

Love this kid with her whackadoodle hair.

* I've been making a batch of muffins, then freezing most of them so they don't go bad before I can eat them all.  This has led to me having a cup of tea and a muffin in the afternoons, which I love!  I guess the Brits have it right with tea time, yes?  My fave right now is this Celestial Seasonings Mandarin Orange Spice.

* I want to do more crafty tutorials on here.  Don't be surprised if you see a few in the future!  I'd also be totally open to suggestions for tutorials you want to see, I always love a good new source of inspiration.

Ok, I think that's it for now.  My mind = dumped.  Let's see what else I can get done now while Ruby naps (please take a long nap, please take a long nap).
